Is it time for the Pelosi Club to stand up and be counted?
Tue May 20, 2008 at 09:02:25 PM PDT
As we are all aware, Senator Barack Obama has cinched the majority of pledged delegates, making it impossible for Senator Clinton to surpass him in that measure, which happens to be the one, true measure agreed on by all candidates at the beginning of the primaries. Will the Pelosi Club endorse Senator Obama immediately, or will they wait until the final three contests are held?
More after the Jump.
For those of you who may be new to the site, or have been living under a rock for a while, I’ll provide a brief description of what the Pelosi Club actually is. The Pelosi Club is a group of Superdelegates who have decided to throw their support behind the Democratic candidate who has the most pledged delegates at the end of the primariy contests. Since we still have 3 elections to go, it may be a little premature to expect their endorsements, however, with Barack Obama surpassing the half-way mark of pledged delegates, making it mathematically impossible for Hillary Clinton to overcome his pledged delegate lead, they’ve got nothing to lose by endorsing now.
A little information about the Pelosi Club Members via DemConWatch, you can also view the entire article here.
As of 5/12 we have 8members of the Pelosi Club:
Clinton endorsers:
Sen. Maria Cantwell (WA) - most pledged delegates, most states won
Uncommitted:
Rep. Nancy Pelosi (CA) (added 3/30)
Christine Pelosi (CA) (added 3/30)
Gov. Roy Romer (CO) (added 3/30) (removed 5/13 - endorsed Obama)
Former President Jimmy Carter (GA) (added 5/1)
Betty Richie (TX) (added 3/30)
Denise Johnson (TX) (added 4/6)
Obama endorsers:
Rep. Zoe Lofgren (CA)
Sen. Tom Daschle (SD) (added 3/30)
We also have 1 additional member from Florida:
Obama endorsers:
Rep. Robert Wexler (FL) (added 4/8)
Senator Obama has already received the endorsements of 4 Pelosi Club members:
Gov. Roy Romer (CO)
Rep. Zoe Lofgren (CA)
Sen. Tom Daschle (SD)
Rep. Robert Wexler (FL) but as of right now FL and MI SDs don’t count
Senator Obama would be getting the endorsements of:
Rep. Nancy Peliso (CA)
Christine Pelosi (CA)
President Jimmy Carter(GA)
Betty Richie (TX)
Denise Johnson (TX)
And
Sen. Maria Cantwell (WA) – who had endorsed Clinton so it will be a net loss for her.
So if the members of the Pelosi Club were to endorse in the near future, Senator Obama looks to gain an additional 6 Supers and Hillary would be –1. Hopefully, they'll to this sooner than later.
